Twaweza Jamii is social enterprise that seeks to create a link between communities and critical social-economic services that have since been stifled by insufficient, often very expensive services to already resource constrained communities. We establish a blend of community understanding of its dynamic and unique situations with efficiently simplified and innovative approaches towards realizing client tailormade needs, to address this uniqueness in informal settlements of Kenya major cities.
This has been assimilated from the persistent long working relationship between communities and the civil society sector that has exposed an overarching need to address the aspirations of vulnerable and marginalized communities putting in play their limited financial resources. With the emerging social and economic needs occasioned by global geopolitical tensions, inflation and climate change, communities are increasingly being predisposed to harsh living conditions perpetuated by their poor inhabitable homes, increasing waste menace, poor urban planning, increasing unpredictable natural calamities like floods, and the rising urban population that has burdened the already limited resources thus further exposing communities to poverty and impoverishment. Combining the vast knowledge and experience of civil society sector and subsidized critical services like housing provision and waste management augment efforts to upgrade urban settlements but also advance living conditions of urban slum dwellers.
The company derives its bottom-up approach of service provision from the community networks and needs already established in informal settlements. These networks, often driven by the ambition to change status of their settlements, have had instruments like saving schemes to rally their counterparts towards development. We understand that community material power can only be effective if the power is channeled towards innovative and responsive integrated service development and provision which the company delights to be championing.
Overturning the status of communities and transforming them to vibrant life supporting harbors of growth and advancement remains the sole purpose of Twaweza Jamii. We envisage a future of vibrant urban settlements that dignifies human life in the spheres of critical services like waste management, decent and affordable housing, effective savings schemes, logistical efficiencies and well planned and designed urban fabrics. We seek to use the approach of a social enterprise to provide life-changing services to communities while considering affordability, efficiency and ownership. To attain this state of utopia, we embrace the virtue of co-designing and co-development thereby giving clients a sense of ownership in service provision to respond to their needs according to their unique circumstances at settlement level.
Twaweza Jamii seeks to ride on Pamoja trust long standing work and reputation with communities to advance lives in informal settlements through community structures like housing cooperatives, urban savings and loaning, residents and neighborhood associations, SACCOs as we equally seek to set precedence on accruing benefits of collaborations between corporate and civil society sectors. We seek to redefine service provision in the sectors of housing, waste to wealth, microfinancing and logistical support embracing cutting edge technology and innovations to enhance service provision, uplift community social wellbeing and bolster slum upgrading through affordable yet efficient community-oriented services.
To foster uniqueness and dependability of its services towards addressing client needs, we adopt a value addition outlook in the key areas of waste to wealth, affordable housing design and materials, microfinancing and logistics. We develop services from the client’s perspective to embody efficiency. Through its data driven interventions curved from numerous community studies, Twaweza Jamii boasts of its informed methodology that respond to emerging challenges and opportunities in the areas of alternative building materials, waste recycling to useful products, microfinancing to vulnerable groups and logistical arrangements as critical services. The merging of corporate interests and civil society ideologies of putting first community interests and rights gives birth to the unique service provision by Twaweza Jamii thereby having a client centered service. We ensure that client interest and situation are not only put first but define the outcome of service provided.
